Chai is the lifeblood of India. Served from dawn until way past dusk, this beverage is everywhere you look. It’s in little street cafes, sold from chaiwallahs at every bus station, train station and street corner, brewing in every home. Follow the steps below to recreate an authentic chai experience.

Gather Chai Ingredients
Step 1: Gather your  Masala Chai, milk of choice (cow’s milk, soy, nut milk or coconut!) sweetner of choice, fresh ginger, a pot for the stove, as well as your serving cup and a tea strainer.

How To Make Masala Chai
Step 2: Add half a cup of filtered water, 1/2 a tsp of finely chopped ginger and sweetener  to a pot. Bring to a boil. Add 1-2 teaspoons of Masala Chai and immediately remove from the heat for 3-5 minutes.

Adding Milk to Masala Chai
Step 3: After 3-5 minutes add 1 cup of milk of your choice and return to the pot to the heat.

How to make authentic Chai
Step 4: Slowly bring the mixture up to temperature, stirring regulary. Being careful to avoid a boil over.

Straining Chai Tea
Step 5: When your chai is done, carefuly strain directly into your cup and serve!
